It's 4 months on, so I hope you've got proof of when you reported it as faulty. An email printout would do.

It's a myth that you need a receipt, but you *do need* proof of purchase eg. credit card statement. If you paid over a ton for something by credit card, you've got extra protection from the card issuer too.

1 year warranties are common, but they're just an extra that the seller throws in.

You can claim against the manufacturer instead of the seller if you want, but since your contract was with the seller (and they're not usually half way round the world), it's generally best to go by that route.

If the model was only released within the warranty period, the manufacturer could hardly claim it failed outside that time. The seller however, may argue that you bought it somewhere else.

Statutory Rights: There are lots that shops don't like being reminded of. The Sale of Goods Act is probably the most useful one. The key words are "...of merchantable quality" and "fit for purpose".

ISTR that such items are generally expected to last at least two years and you can claim a pro-rata rebate on the remaining time.

Check out Martin Lewis's website. He's got all the info you need and it has forums where you can get tips on how to wangle blood out of superstore stones. The site also has printouts that have proven to be very effective against shop staff's dogmatic denials of consumer rights.

Bon chance!
