Unhappy Hi new idiot here..

Help....
Blank screen with window message 'channel not curently available' is all I can get after trying to link DVD player and VCR...
Disconnected both and tried clear data in config, and then power scan in installation, but when it does search, it does not detect programmes and the usual list of programmes do not appear. Message TP:000 is the only thing in the window.
On the box itself, the code 0000 remains, and cannot be altered, if I click from standby mode it briefly changes to 0001 but then immediately back to 0000.
Origainal cable box provides programmes if I connect that back up.
Can anyone help please.
Cheers

Thanks for that but have even tried changing leads to no effect.
When the system is reloading channells it seems to be leapfrogging ... some searches give nearly full green signal, with the majority only a few % red, but it's the fact that the programme list doesn't appear as its searching that I think is the key..
Come on someone, don't want to miss too much sport... :-)
