If it was that easy this sort of fraud would not be happening in the first place.

When 200 laptops or more get stolen they are losing thousands of money. So am not sure where it does become cost effective or not?

Insurance companies aren't losing money, they take more in premiums to cover payouts, and always will. Occasionally they take a hit one year when unexpectedly large claims come in (floods, riots etc), but the premiums rise the following year to cover. Because they have a guaranteed loss covering system, they don't need to search for ways to reduce payouts, as they can increase the premiums. Bearing that in mind, how much do you think it would cost to recover a laptop, even if you could go to the police with the name and address of the (suspected) thief? Even without the hassle of getting a warrant, a police officer would have to go to the address then hopefully catch the suspect at home, with the stolen laptop, arrest the suspect for possession, interview, take statements, appear in court...It would lead to costs of £1000's for a sub-£1000 piece of equipment, with little likely chance of prosecution (I bought it off a mate/bloke in pub/car boot).

if he installed a tracking device on I would assume it would need some sort of GPS on there in order for the thief to be tracked down. Unless he has some next level software where he was getting all the info, which I don't know how. I would assume he had some sort of GPS hardware on there and as soon as the culprit connected to the Internet he started getting all sorts of information of him.

Without that tracking device he would be looking for shadows!

The article mentions a tracking device (not GPS), but I'd guess it's a classic TW article, with little in the way of facts, and just a general overview of a story. From the way the guy caught the suspect, it seems like he had keylogger type software which was remotely controllable. So for "tracking device" it would be better to assume software than hardware. Besides GPS wouldn't be as useful as someones facebook account/password.

For the record, several Macbook owners have done similar, RAT software installed to take screengrabs and webcam shots - no GPS involved in recovery.

Going to the police with "my laptop was at lat 0091232 lon 0938723" isn't as useful as "My laptop is being consistently used by Mr XXXX, he's repeatedly logged into facebook, he's sent messages about getting the laptop from my house whilst I was on holiday".

Granted the Mac Address and IP would have given the game away if the insurance company did go that far, but the procedure in it self it far too long and would probably takes months of Investigation.

Do you realise that by saying the above, you're contradicting the statement you made below?

They can't find out. It is impossible for them to track it down.

If it was that easy to clamp it down then am sure they would have done it by now and started paying who ever it is to do the investigation etc etc. As that would be cheaper for them in the long run.

Pubs get burned down, Phones get stolen etc etc and all this is adding up the figures @ the end of the day.
You do realise how easy it would be for VM to clamp down on hookey boxes, yet they don't.

I never said it was easy, I said it was possible (but not probable). How do you think hackers (who go to great lengths to hide their identity online) get caught? If they can find someone who's using proxies and VPN's, they can find someone who thinks security is having numbers AND letters in their Facebook password.

So, do you admit you were wrong when you said...

Thumbs up Re: A little help plz

After reading what you have stated above it seems as though your correct.

I was wrong. However there are groups of hackers who have managed to keep there identities hidden and not been caught.
