They can't find out. It is impossible for them to track it down. Going on the internet would only display the ip address ( WAN IP ).

I don't think that is correct. I belive it is possible to track it down when connected to the internet.

I read something, might have been a video, on you tube, where some guy managed to trace his stolen laptop and get it back.

Though, can't see the insurance company doing it be honest.

Alot of laptops get stolen and are never to be found even if you have insurance on them.

The only possible way I can think that it was recovered is via 2 ways

1) He had a GPS tracking software on the laptop.

2) Met Police issue this marker which u mark all electrical items using that pen and it can then be seen under a certain Light which I cant remember the name of it.

Stolen laptops are as good as gone. Which was the same with Mobile phones until network providers decided to get them barred and not to mention now they come with GPS built in. And you can register the phone on the site i.e like Lookout Mobile which is on black berry and HTC Android OS phones.

Other then that I really cant see how the guy managed to track it down.

Also not too mention that stolen laptops tend to get sold on Ebay, that includes Mobile phones as well.

However I am curious to watch that video, so if you could find the link and post it here it would be greatly appreciated mate.

I've heard that electronic devices which connect to networks will soon have to have some kind of address, or unique identifier. Perhaps that might be used to locate missing hardware?

In answer to the OP, it's massively unlikely you'll get caught, though it's a little more likely now you've spoke about it on a forum

You're quite sure about that? Your knowledge of these matters is good enough for you to offer advice which could potentially land the OP in legal bother? Because you really shouldn't speak with such authority on serious matters if you don't know what you're talking about.
