Use torrents mate

www.utorrent.com for the client and torrent-finder.com for the torrents

Word of warning, if you do go down the "torrent" route then make sure you use a program like PeerGuardian to protect your machine from spammers, agencies, idiots etc..

Also, it all depends on what you want to down load tho, not much is "free" from Microsoft these days and a site like http://www.filehippo.com/ contains links to loads of other tools that could be handy for you..
