Cannot record onto USB - format problem?

Hi I have a Humax HD 5400S.

I can connect a USB stick to the box and can view jpgs and xvids.

I tried to record and it says not available.

The manual says the disk needs to be formatted as ext3 for recording to work. Seeing as I have a windows XP PC I couldn't do it.

However I formatted the drive to FatExt on my PC (thats what I originally thought ext3 was!).

The Humax box then notices its not formatted so asks if I want to format it which I did and it says it has done correctly. When I view it in Humax settings it has it down as Humax PVR.

When I press the record button I get the circle with diagonal line through it icon - indicating not possible.

I inserted stick into PC and it cannot read it - indicating to me it has been formatted as non FAT,NTFS. I tried with another stick -same problem.

What am I doing wrong?

Done some digging and there are people who say that it works with a HD but not a memory stick. It doesn't matter weither the HD gets its power by USB or separate power lead.

Doesn't make sense. Don't want to go and buy an external HDisk just for PVR to find it doesn't work...
