Could be that the box isn't quite supplying enough power to the USB, or rather the HDD is drawing slightly too much. This sometimes happens with USB HDD that draw power from the USB rather than have their own PSU.

That might be one issue I'm sure but we have seen usb sticks that they don't like .... sandisk are ok ...
