It depends what you want to use it for, at the moment I'm using a Dray Tek Vigor 2710 model, different models have different options. If he's only using it for the internet then stick with the modem, once you get it working.

Modem working mate , just trying to get a wireless router to enable more ports attached to it

Most routers have Wi Fi connectivity but you might require extra if you're using it for networking PC's.
Check to see if there's a recent top 10 test/survey, regarding routers, on the internet, PC Advisor usually does a top 10 chart of the ones they've tested.
