Default Bit of help with talk talk modem

My mate wants a starview , but when i went round he has talk talk and the modem although wireless has only one port which is being used by his 1920's desktop .

So got a ASDL modem ( Belkin model )

Now here is where i am stuck , with cable internet and modem easy to do ethrenet lead from one to the other and away you go .

Tried that 1st with belkin and no joy .

So then tried putting the phone line into belkin but couldn't find internet .

Not far off i know but struggling , a quick guide or fix by 1 of you clever guys would be very helpful .

Thanking you Mark

Why is he still using an old modem, and not a router?
Can you please post the model number, of the new modem, so I can check out the technical specifications.

TalkTalk give D-Link modem/router combos to their customers now. They come pre-configured with a user name and password (you need this information in order to connect to the internet).

TP-LINK 5 PORT 10/100 UNMANAGED MINI DESKTOP NETWORK SWITCH (TL-SF1005D)

Would this do the job ?
Guy on fleabay says it is a simple plug in and away you go , no need for messing with ip address

Do Talktalk still send out a welcome booklet, with your username and password?

I think you can also access this information by dialing talktalk's automatic telephone number, at least I did when setting one up a few months ago.

The username used to be your telephone number @ talktalk.net and the password was random.

Ignore the IP address this is gotten automatically and doesn't have to be assigned.

So it's a case of plugging the ASDL line into belkin and then entering the details ?

No need for the talk talk modem in the chain ?

Just use one of the modems, not both, as you should have enough ports using just the one, personally I prefer a top quality router, but the modem should work fine.
