Default hp printer problem

had an hp2175 printer/scanner copier for a few years now but for the last month or so, when i switch on, it makes a funny noise for 2 or 3 mins then says "scanner failure, switch off and restart " doing this it just repeats itself.. light is on, inks ok. now and again it will turn on as normal but cant be guarrenteed.
at a loss .. any ideas folks???

Probably some broken gear teeth. What with these All-in-Ones being so cheap nowadays you might aswell buy a new one, Ive seen some selling for as little as what it costs just to buy replacement inks..

Is this when the printer is connected to pc or just when your turning the printer on alone?

If its when connected to pc then try uninstalling it and then reinstall it again from cd.

your problem is with the scanner carriage...when you turn your printer on the carriage needs to find its "home" position if it cant do this then the drives judder creating the noise you are hearing.
afraid it really will be cheaper to replace than repair unless you can get it working and then leave it switched on so that the scan carraige doesnt have to move.
