Normally TV's with a VGA port also have a 3.5mm Audio Input socket nearby to take the sound from the PC/Laptops headphone or line out socket.. Have a look near the TV's VGA socket for what looks like a 3.5mm headphone socket, chances are thats the PC audio input socket..

A VGA cable from laptop to TV will work fine, but no sound. U need to use 3.5 mm jack plug from laptop to tv phono or surround amp

On my tv there is a 3.5 mm Jack over the vga socket, I just plug that into my Headphone socket on my laptop and off you go

On the front of the TV thats most likely just the Headphone audio output socket, not an audio input socket... Is there not another 3.5mm socket near to where the VGA port is? Or are there RCA phono sockets near the VGA port? Does your TV's manual detail connectivity options for PC computer?

Wrong, that sort of connection would be for a composite video with audio input on the TV, not for connecting VGA output from Laptop.. You need to use the correct audio input socket when using the VGA input, because when you select "PC" or "VGA" from the TV's AV menu it will switch to that required audio input port and disable others.. Im sure if the OP reads the TV manual it will all be clear..
