I acquired a 32" Full HD (1080p) LCD TV yesterday and I have it hooked up to my computer with VGA at the moment. When I tried HDMI, it would let me select 1080p (1920×1080) resolution but the desktop seems to be "extending" beyond the screen limits.
I am using VGA at the moment using 1920x1080 resolution and it looks fine but I would prefer to use HDMI as I can get audio through that as well whereas with VGA I can't (due to having no external speakers). I have a motherboard with an integrated GeForce 9300 GPU which has HDMI and if you read here, you will see that it is 1080p capable. Does anybody know why this is happening? Thanks in advance .

Its the "overscan", have a look in your TV menu settings for an overscan on/off toggle and adjust it, that should resolve it..
Failing that, in the graphics card settings in TV setup, click the option to "resize desktop" and move the slider to fit TV...

I don't have the over-scan option, or at least I can't find it if I do. I already tried the desktop resize method and it worked but it also reduced the resolution.

The "resize desktop" slider doesnt really reduce resolution, it pulls in the overscan, thats all.. Ignore the fact that it tells you that the display is a few pixels less either side now, its perfectly normal and its still 1080p as far as your TV is concerned, the missing pixels are now the overscan..
Out of curiosity, in the Graphics control Panel, in TV setup, does it know your make of TV or does it just say its something generic like "LCD TV"? The best option is to disable the TV's overscan on the TV itself, not all TV's allow for it though.. Its a daft feature anyway as we're all digital TV now, the extra TV data that used to hide around the picture are not there anymore.. What TV make/model have you got?

It shows up as "LCDTV14" or something and it's a Baird - the model number is CN32BAIRD. I am using the HDMI cable that I got with my XBOX 360, this wouldn't make a difference would it?

no, the cable isnt making anything paticular happen, what you're experiencing is perfectly normal behaviour when connecting PC to a TV...
Baird TV eh, 40 years ago that name would have meant a quality TV set, unfortunately now that name is owned by cheapo chinese factory.. Use the "resiz desktop slider" as I previously mentioned, its what its there for, because of TV overscan its what most people have to use when hooking up PC to a TV...

The resize option appeared to work and I can now see the whole desktop but the image looks pretty blurry and grainy.

Is it worse or better compared to when you connected using VGA?
