Question Having Multiple Superhubs

Hi

I have a friend who came out with this ridiculous idea and stated that because he wants everything hard wired.. i.e xbox and so on

Currently hes on a 50MB connection. He is planning to buy a SuperHub and have one in the living room and one in his office upstairs connected to the PC.

He think that having a 2nd superHub connected down stairs will enable him to have it Hard wired.

Now I told him that in networking in order for the theory to work you would need to have the 2nd router be used as either a switch or a wireless extender.

Otherwise this theory would never work!

He fails to agree to me and claims that VM techie told him it is possible to do that.

So unless am wrong here and VM now have that capability then its beyond me but I cant see the idea working without a switch!

eh ?

I fail to see the point of what he's doing. Why not just get a cheapy switch (you can get new ones for around £8)

I guess this guy and the VM "Techie" (lol) dont have a clue about networking, I guess they assume their virgin internet can only be had by plugging directly into a virgin Superhub, they maybe think a Belkin switch/hub will connect them to Belkin internet... People likes these are the ones who say their PC has 500gb memory, or that they tried downloading the internet the other day, or that they know how to fix PC's cause they know how to run Defrag...lol

yeah, the guy needs his head looking at.

if he wants wired, go wired. however complex the switching and connections.

he doesnt want to get another superhub. if he did this, he's cutting the bandwidth between 'upstairs' and 'downstairs' to the upload limit of the superhub.

if he simply did go wired, he'd have a gigabit between comps. (i think the superhub is gigabit? someone let me know if im wrong )

unless this guy is talking about using the superhub as a switch and flashing it with something or other?

even still, superhubs suck. i mean there is one at the centre of my network but only because i have to have one, not out of choice.

He thinks by having 2 Super hubs and because the first one is located in his office upstairs and downstairs he has an x box. So he feels in order to get the xbox wired he reckons that by getting a 2nd super-hub and plugging it in like downstairs while leaving the other one plugged in upstairs will allow him to connect 8 devices between 2 super-hubs. (4 each)

In theory this would never work as I told him he would need to disable the DHCP on the 2nd and use it as switch. Which means he would still need to hardwire the 2nd router to the first one which is upstairs connected to the '' VM Mains''.

To make things worse the VM engineer told him that he can have as many VM hubs in the house so that he can connect different devices in different parts of the house without the need of a switch. LMAO

You are right! it is so much cheaper to just buy a switch and do the job. Not to mention is that my friends Theory of having Multiple SuperHubs in the house is actually an Epic FAIL!

Not sure how if it would even cut the bandwidth because the 2 modems would conflict.

To me this all sounds impossible and the only way forward is by actually getting a switch.

But he wants to go ahead and try it, Thinking that this would work is CRAZY!

Is he thinking about having 2 separate Internet connections, you could use 2 Superhubs for that.

On a single connection, a switch (or 2) work very well, it's much easier than dragging all your Ethernet cables back to a single location.

I've come on here to investigate this concept. I have a superhub on a 50mb sub from VM. I've now got a 2nd superhub from a friend who's ditched VM and dodged their requests to have it returned to them.

I've currently got my paid superhub in an office section of the house and ideally want this second superhub as a separate internet connection in another part of the house. This is for 2 reasons:

1, I can't get a signal from the paid hub from the lounge - it's too far away.

2, I want to link a slingbox to superhub 2 from the lounge (which has a separate VM cable coming into it).

That said, I'm having problems configuring this as I just get 3 green flashing lights and when I plug the ethernet into the hub I can't even get a hard wired connection. I can however get access to the hub via ethernet with the 192.168.0.1 ip. The advnaced screen shows that access is denied. I'm guessing VM know that I'm not supposed to be using a separate line.

Any help configuring this would be much appreciated.

perhaps this is better suited to a separate thread...

just stick it all on one hub. job done.

what your trying to create is just the same as two houses, (however far apart) talking over the internet.

if your saying you want two wans in the same place then ok, your going in the right direction but still, you could just as easily sub to both virgin and bt/o2/sky/plusnet ect, ect.

anyhow, if you want to use one wan to talk to another i wouldnt expect the speed your going to get with a ethernet connection. you'd be talking gigabits with ethernet against whatever the lowest upload speed of the wans is.
