Default iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak Confirmed To Be Working On iOS 5.0.1

It was only a few days ago when iOS developer and hacker Pod2g showed off his new untethered jailbreak exploit running on iOS 5. At that time, he tested it on a third-gen iPod touch running iOS 5.0 and wasn’t sure if it would also work on the new iOS 5.0.1 as well. But he did promise to test it on iOS 5.0.1 and report back accordingly with results.

Well today, after testing the exploit on his iPhone 4 running the latest iOS 5.0.1, he has confirmed via his account that it is indeed working which ultimately means that you are all now free to update your A4-based iOS devices to iOS 5.0.1.

iPhone unlockers who rely on Ultrasn0w are still advised against upgrading to preserve the old baseband.

This is indeed good news for those who accidently updated to iOS 5.0.1, only to have found themselves being locked out on the new firmware, with having no real way to downgrade back to iOS 5.0.

It is important to note here that so far, the exploit has only been confirmed to be working on A4-based devices, and below, like iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G (and 3G), Apple TV, and the first-generation iPad.

There has been no confirmation of it being working on A5 based devices like the new iPhone 4S and the iPad 2 yet.

Currently, the only way to jailbreak iOS and iOS 5.0.1 on A4-based devices is to use semi-tethered jailbreaks offered by either Redsn0w, Sn0wbreeze, or Ac1dSn0w.

For jailbreaking iOS 5 tethered using Redsn0w, you can follow our complete step by step guide posted here, or here if you want to use Sn0wbreeze on Windows. Since jailbreak on iOS 5 is currently limited to tethered boot only, you can install ‘SemiTether’ patch (instructions here) from Cydia to make your jailbreak semi-tethered on iOS 5.

For those of you on iOS 5.0.1 can follow our instructionsposted here on how to jailbreak using Redsn0w, or here using Ac1dSn0w (instructions withAc1dSn0w Beta 2 here), or here using Sn0wbreeze.
