Post Problems Installing a new cable wire

Hi all. I recently moved into a new flat. Not having a cable wire already installed in the flat I decided to do it myself. I bought coaxial cable and the screw on connectors.

After drilling a hole in my windows frame and putting the wire down I connected it to the Omnibox I believe its called, the brown box outside :P

After connecting it all I then put my modem on to see if it worked and no joy.

On the haxorware signal page my receive power is -25DbmV. While my modem was on I pulled the wire that goes through my window frame tight. I then got +10 DbmV but as soon as i let go it goes back down to -25.

Does anyone know why this is, crappy wire or connectors not on right?

I tryed to jam the wire after pulling it but then it just drops signal again I don't have a clue and I have tried many different connectors on the end of the coaxial.

If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it. My head is battered trying to do this lol :P

Check you havnt got an outer wire trapped touching the inner in your connectors, or maybe the inner is broken somewhere ? did you bend it about too much getting it through the window frame ? is it the cheaper tv aerial type coax ? you really need the better quality type.

Thanks for the reply mate

It is pretty cheap. Got RG6 wrote on it and it does seem quite flexible compared to other wires.

in the flat there is a broken phone outlet. The wire runs right down to the virgin media brown box. will this work. The wire just needs connecting with a connector and a 2 way splitter.

Buy an already made up lead and try that, if that doesn't work, it is possible that you have been disconnected in the street. To get it working you need to pay for a service from Virgin, which you should be doing anyway.

Not been disconnected mate, When pulling the wire and messing with it I got operational on my modem, only for a minute but it did connect.

Must be your dodgy wiring then, or a dodgy connector.

Is it possible you havn't bared enough wire to the f plug and that is why you are
getting a poor signal/connection.

i know it sounds silly but if you have a old virgin box or a old starview try them and if you get a picture you know your working...

or could be weak line so needs a boost... by trying the tv boxes that does kick the line in...

or last but not least bang the wire in the back of the TV and see if it picks up bbc1 etc... goodluck!
