Default sluggish laptop

Hi, I have a problem with a packard easynote e2313.
At switch on once windows has loaded it takes quite a while before any symbols appear on the screen. It also takes a while eg to find 'my computer'.
I have noticed that the fan runs fast initially but after this it stops but will start again then stop etc but most of the time it is not running.
Could a fellow member please advise.
Regards

First i would do a scan with superantispyware or malwarebytes or similar to make sure you havnt picked something up.
Are you running an up to date antivirus ?.
How full is the hard drive ? are you running a lot of extra programs at start up ? you could probably disable some unnecessary ones and just open them when you use them.
What version of windows is on it ? also in system properties check how much ram is showing ?
The fan will run when its under load and should turn off or slow when its cool enough.

Hi, thank you for your prompt reply.
The pc was scanned last month but hasn't been used until now.
I am using avg 2012 and have a total hdd of 33.2 gb with free space of 22.6 gb and ram of 224 mb.
Since sending out my message, I have noticed something that might point to what is wrong with my pc.
If I look in task mngr under performance, the cpu usage box in the top left hand corner is fluctuating from 0 to 12 then 0 to 16 then 0 to 28 then 0 to 46 and so on, this must indicate that something is wrong.
Regards

You must be running XP, if you think its a hardware fault like processer or ram, On" Major Geeks" site you can download some freeware to check the cpu and ram.
Might be worth defragmenting the hard drive if that hasnt been done in a while.

You could also back up all your data on a dvd and then format it and put XP back on.. if you don't want to do this. then run a program called CC Cleaner this will clean the computer of unwanted files also you can check your start up menu from this program

If it was my laptop i would get more ram for it and also a new hdd then i would put xp on fresh.

also cleaning the heatsink inside would not go a miss if you dont want to take it it apart try using your hoover at the vents.

ebay will be your mate for parts
