Default Sky TV rumours

My apologies if this question has been answered elsewhere, but I cannot find any reference to it.
There are rumours in the expat community that the satellites at Astra 2 28 deg are coming to the end of their useful life and Sky channels are going to move to the Astra 1 position at 19 deg. I have heard that this could be as soon as August 2012 or as late as two years time.
This would deprive expats in Spain, Italy, Greece and elsewhere of their UK TV via satellite.
Can anyone confirm or deny this rumour?

I wouldn't of though so. Such a thing would be a mammoth headache for Sky as every single customer dish would have to be re-aligned.

Not at all, the Astra 1 (19e) location is almost fully booked. Astra have regularly located new Satellites at the 28e slot. You may have heard that the latest Satellite to be located at 28.2e is Astra 1N.

Thanks for the reassurance guys. As you say, it is inconceivable that all the dishes could be moved to 19 deg. I understand 1N has a UK centred beam similar to Astra 2D and I wonder if channels might gradually be moved to this new satellite?

Astra 1N is only a temporary stop gap until Astra 2E launches this year and takes it's place, 1N will then be located at 19° permanently

There are quite a few channels on 1N already, including some ITV regions. I believe that all new Satellites at 28e will have a "UK Beam", so expect more channels to weaken when receiving from outside of the UK.

That must be where the rumour has come from! Presumably, when 2E is launched, it will have a narrow UK beam and channels will start to move to it. Sky could lose a lot of customers!

Damn, I spend quite a lot of time in Holland every year... Wanted to buy sky from my Amsterdam apartment... Is it still worth it you think?

You should get the UK beam from Amsterdam OK - it's not that tight on the UK

Spain/Portugal is likely to struggle.
