Is it connected using an IDE cable or is it a newer SATA DVD Drive?
Try another EIDE cable, or the other port. Is it connected as a single drive or joined to another device? If so check the master/slave pins. |

found this somewhere sounds crazy enough to work
I had this exact same problem and just fixed it. What you need to do is download and install Daemon Tools for free, then use it to mount a virtual (fake) CD drive. Then go to device manager, and you will see that the CD/DVD drive category has re-appeared for the fake drive. Select this category and scan for new devices. Your original CD/DVD drive should reappear on my computer and device manager. Enjoy! |

please explain exactly what it is you want to do please you stated above that your drive in your laptop has become defect from what am gathering on your post. Now what is it that you need the drive for ? Do you just want the drive so that you can install apps on your laptop? Or do you want it for the purpose of that u can watch movies and incase if windows ever goes tits up you can format and reinstall it? If you want to install the apps and they are in ISO format then you can always use deamon tools which allow you to mount the image. Alternatively you can even open the ISO file using Win-rar and then clicking on ''Set-up.exe'' file. if you have bought a new drive and you have it installed then by default the OS will install the driver for you and you wouldn't have to install it. You can however go on the manufacturers website and see if you can locate the drivers from there. However before you do any of that you need to check in Bios of the drive is detected! Alternatively.. you can buy a cable which converts any 3.5 inch drive into a USB. Downside is that they would need to be powered up using a wall outlet. If your bios supports boot from USB devices then you can even use it too install Windows. Assuming that your recovery partition is not been tampered with in form or shape.

Maybe a reflash of the system bios might cure it... See if theres a bios upgrade on acers support downloads for your laptop.. Worth a try..
