Time to pick your brains again.
I have not done any recording with my TM 5402HD.
So I thought that it is time to have a look at it.
I tried a 8GB usb stick.That worked fine.Then I tried a external HDD.I have three USB powered ones.Two with two USB plugs,one for power,and one for data.I also have a 350GB WD passport drive.That has just one USB plug.It gets the power and data from the same socket.The TM has only one USB socket,so I plugged the WD one in.The TM does not see it.
So what is the problem.Nothing in the manual about connecting hard drives.
I suspect that I may need a self powered external drive.

If it is like the older technomates,it must be fat 32. There are instructions and a prog called fat32format on the tm website. I was using that just yesterday to get a drive working on my tm6800.

Can the drive be seen in File Manager,under USB in the Main Menu on the TM?

No, it does not show in the usb file manager.I think that you have hit the nail on the head.The drive has loads of clonezilla HDD images on it.It may be formatted in linux EXT3 format.I have realised since my first post that I have a 500GB external drive.powered with a power brick.I will try that.When I get time.

No joy yet.
The WD Passport drive is formated NTFS.
My 500gb self powered external drive is also NTFS.
I cannot wipe either drive because they are both used for storage and backups.
So the problem is on hold for now.

SORTED

My 500gb drive has three partitions on it.The smallest 59 GB.On this partition was just a windows folder,I have forgotten what it was for. So I deleted it,and reformatted that partition in FAT32.Tried the drive on the TM5402hd..In the USB file manager The partition shows as 59GB. 59GB free.

Oh, that's good, you were lucky. On the drive I got working I had one part of it formatted to fat 32, but the other part as a hidden recovery section.
The tm could see both parts, as vol 0 and vol 1. Volume 1 was the fat 32, but it would only try vol 0 for pvr functions, so it didn't work. I had to use disk part,to clean the whole disk, and reformat it.
