Usually the email is deleted from the server (with private email addresses) so you would need to sync your devices so that they shared their data.

However, if you use a free email address such as Gmail then you simply use the IMAP connection to connect an email client to it - and from any device you should see what is already stored there.

I use Gmail and it syncs OK with Android. If you delete on one device it does delete in all.

I have just got a new smart phone which is great but when I have wi-fi switched on at home, it collects all my emails and they then don't arrive on my laptop. If I leave it switched off, the emails land first on my laptop but then also arrive on my phone when I switch that on. I'm told it is to do with my Virgin Media settings but I don't know how to remedy it. If anyone can help me I'd be really grateful.

You would need to set it to leave messages on server - but I've no idea how to do that on your device.
