Post VW Golf 1.4, 4 speed

hi my name is guy I’ve got a Mk3 1.4, 4 speed its really getting on my nerves!!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
the car started first time every time when i first bought it 1 month ago, then i put a knN air filter on it because my friend took it off his car and had no use for it, from this point on the car would start intermitantly and some times not at all. so after this i took the spark plugs out cleaned them, then i put a new dissy cap and rotary arm on. this fixed the problem for a day. after this i decided to take the filter off and this seemed to solve the problem and the car started first time. the car then stood for a weekend and when i came back to it nothing, the car didn’t seem to be kicking over as quick as previously, the fuel line out of the carb was checked and petrol came out at speed so all i can think is that its a electrical problem and i have no experience or in fact any idea what could be wrong with the car, if any one has a clue i would be greatfull!!<o></o>

bad running problems ar rife with these...other than that a wire has been damaged somewhere when u fitted the filter
