Slow PC? Check what apps are running, these days lots of programs decide they need to start up with your pc - like quicktime. How often do you use quicktime? Probably not enough to need it hogging memory idly.
You can do start-run and type 'msconfig' and disable programs on boot. You can undo your mistakes - windows gives you a message detailing this. Google for it, this is a topic covered probably thousands of times, they can offer more advice than I can here. I recommend you give your hard drives a good defrag, empty your temp files. But likely the main cause is programs hogging RAM. Defragging helps, but I've never found a fragmented disk to be that much of a slowdown. Like anabell says, task manager - check what process are running. You may wish to list the processes by amount of RAM in use to see which is hogging the most. Also try registry cleaning, I recommend tools such as Ccleaner and Registry Cleaner. They do backups too. If you have filesystem indexing turned on (a feature to facilitate fast searches by indexing all your files), this can be a slow down too. I've only covered a few, I hope your searches turn up some useful advice, as I'm sure they will. Phil |

Good advice svenviking but i find msconfig is a bit like just kill it ! where as if you type services.msc into the run dialog box this gives you everything running on your system and if you highlight an application on the left in the services local window you will see an explanation of that service and options, also if you try to stop an essential process Windows will tell you, please see picture below
![]() Click Start > Run > type services.msc in the Run Box ![]()

Hi Tee_111
Basically any programs you don't use "eg" if your not on dial up you don't need telephony, i have clip book disabled and as i don't use messenger that is disabled to you may find This helpful or if you like take a snap of your services and PM it to me "no one ells will see it" and i can suggest what you don't need running Ann

Msconfig shows you the services running as well as other startup programs starting up by being in the start menu startup folder and by registry entry. Programs that start up with your computer are not always registered as services. Though you could with Regsvr32.exe..
I just had a 160GB drive die i've had to buy a replacement ..need to try salvage my 150gb of stuff :/ Phil |
