i have a router with 10/100 lan ports and a Network attached hardrive server with gigabit lan ports.

what ethernet cable can i use i.e. does it have to be 10/100 ethernet cable or can i use a gigabit cable.

Hi mrwizard

I use 100 BASE-TX - 10/100 Ethernet cables have 8 wires, of witch 4 are used for data. The other wires are twisted around the data lines for electrical stability and resistance so you can use 10/100 (note 'straight-through' (receive to receive and transmit to transmit), but others may need to be wired in the 'crossover' form (receive to transmit and transmit to receive)

I use CAT-6 cables which should be Gigabit rated, although 100baseT - 10/100 will suffice.

Normal straight cables should be Ok for you as most Routers and NAS are auto-sensing - there's not much you still need a crossover cable for

im using my router to connect to the internet via Wifi. my NAS server sits behind the router so all my machines can have a central storage area, plus it hasn't got a wifi adapter, anyway i find the gigabit ethernet connection faster and more reliable. we'll see what happens when 802.11n finalises.

thanks for the help.
