The folders are definitely shared. I've tried to map network drive and if I use the browse facility it will see the folders but won't let me map them and entering the file path directly once again won't let me map it.

I'm trying to update to another (non-OEM) version of XP, but it won't accept any of my serials, not even a genuine VLK.

I might give up with the upgrade attempt and try that app and see what it says.

yes you can try that. but it seems that your registry is croupt .you can try formating and installinghe Same version again and dusring the instalation it will pickup the network. Its easier to connect to the network that way.
By my knowledge i thought if you can ping a PC you can connect to it if the ppropriate protocol is installed.

Well Lincst did you tried by uninstalling and then installing again the File print and sharing protocol..?
Do this once it might help because some services fail during the start up so might be the DNS service or DHCP there are other services which are neccessary to run ..

type services.msc in the "run" and check all th services you can restart them as well.
You have to play around mate to see whats wrong because some Time Windoooos is CRAP and full of garbage

Definitely something wrong in the registry. I've managed to "upgrade" to the generic XP MCE OEM version and networking is perfect, however 95% of the time when booting the PC hangs at the blue welcome screen (just after the windows sound) and a hard re-boot is required.

Just run the Uniblue registry checker and it found 724 errors!!!

I might try a clean install of XP corp as I have a genuine VLK, or MCE as I have an OEM key.

Hi Lincsat

As said i would run HJT, and if your not familiar with the registry i would be happy to check it for you as i do my own on my Computers, or if you decide to go clean install run DBAN first to make sure your HDD is clean.

The problem you discribed above lincsat shows that your explorer is not installed properly and whne you turn on the pc it is not automatially starting explorer.exe and its services properly.
a short fix for the time being to stop hard reboot you can launch task manager and see the process if explorer .exe is running kill it and go to file>run> type explorer.exe it will start a new session this should bring your desktop. if explorer.exe is not there you can still type explorer.exe and start a new session.
If you do a clean install nothing is better than that...!

I did a clean install late last night (about 4am actually), been configuring and adding applications all day - still got a few to go

I didn't use BDAN, but I did format the drive twice, I did use the file and setting transfer wizard but I couldn't apply my settings after the clean install as it seems MCE2005 uses an older version of the wizard than XP Pro SP2!

Still, everything is looking good so far, it's loading half the processes on startup and running slightly quicker - biggest problem was finding the XP driver for the Motherboard's builtin LAN card, I had to extract it from a Ghost image of the old installation as the website only has Vista drivers, but the PC ships with MCE???
