ipod froze on me and warranty ran out can't afford to send it away is there a manual way to fix

My Nano freezes quite regularly Silly question but have you tried resetting it like it says in the troubleshooting instructions

when you say freezes is it not turning on? what model is it? My iPod photo used to freeze up all the time, as well as show the sad ipod icon.

If you can diagnose the problem (knackered battery/hard disk) then you can get the repair parts yourself, I've done it with an Ipod mini and a photo model, it isn't all that tough to repair once you read up on it
