Default virtual memory?

hi my computer has been running very slow recently so i bought a new 512 mb ram and has definetly worked because it now loads straight up where as it used to take 10 minutes. But once its loaded up it starts to run slow again and is still saying that my virtual memory is low. Anyone know what i need to do? thanks

Default Re: virtual memory?

You dont state what OS this is on..assuming xp

Virtual memory is the sum of physical memory and the page file ( an area of the hard disk reserved for this). If your hard disk is nearly full then running disk cleanup to free up some space will help, or consider upgrading to a larger Hard drive.

The default and recommended size for the page file is 1.5 times the amount of physical memory. So if your computer has 512Mb ram it will have a 768 MB page file by default, for a total of 1.25 GB of physical + virtual memory.

to change this size
1.Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2.In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
3.In the Performance pane, click Settings.
4.In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
5.In the Virtual memory pane, click Change.
6.Change the Initial size value and the Maximum size value to a higher value, click Set, and then click OK.
7.Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box, and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box.
