Several receptacles are having surges in my house. For example, when using a hairdryer the speed of the dryer will change to very low blowing and then back to the regular high speed. I have tested several different receptacle and many do the same thing. The existing receptacles are about 20 years old. Some barely hold a plug in. Would replacing the receptacles do the trick or should I be worried about a more serious electrical problem.

If your recepticals are 20 years old then the wiring behinf could possibly be even older. Would suggest getting a periodic inspection to check the installation. Better safe than sorry. Sounds like bad connections or possible insulation breakdown.
