If you subscribe to the internet, it's wise to keep your supplied modem connected, use a splitter to feed the cable signal to a patched modem if you intend to use them - plenty in the shop BTW

The Cable TV and Broadband signal come down the same cable, so once you get an active feed, you can split it and attach many different devices - so long as you don't drop the signal strength too much. You may find that the VM installer will run a couple of extra feeds for you if you tell them that you might be moving the supplied TV Box or Modem to another room in the future and offer to bung them a few quid

Don't rely on a VOIP phone 100%, they can go off in a power cut or during an internet outage - BTW, I also have VOIP/phone adapters in the shop, you may be interested in a single port router which connects to your cable modem and has a single output for your PC and 2 telephone sockets for VOIP service, so you can have 2 different incoming numbers (one for you, other for kids) or configure them for the same number and have the facility for 2 calls at once.

Might be an idea to use the supplied 2meg modem for VOIP and a patched one for normal internet - there are lots of options once you get the live feed

Lincsat, you're a legend.

I'm definitely interested in getting something from "the shop". (please let me know the prices and how to go about purchasing these things).

I've already got two cables running (to seperate rooms) thanks to the previous owners of the property...

I'm thinking about having another two cable running upstairs (or is that overkill?) - I figured I'll get my VM installer some work!

By that plan, i will have 2 boxes from VM (1 cable, 1 TV), and 2 custom boxes (1 modem 1 dbox2) ... one in each room should do it!

Well, I've signed up

a couple of weeks before the engineer comes round, so I'll ask him to sort out a couple more outputs

Have to ask though, I'm expecting my Dbox2 to arrive from Germany in a couple of days. Do I risk plugging it in? or shall i wait for the VM box first, then configure everything...

Lincsat,

How much are the modded modems from "the shop"? w.r.t to the VOIP, does it do cheap mobile calls etc?

I'll have single port router from my soon to be defunct ADSL service, so i'll try and follow your advice on VOIP...

Cheers.

VOIP = Voice Over IP

basically you can make phone calls (Landlines + Mobiles) over an internet connection. I use a programe called LowerRateVoip, which allows me to call all landlines in the UK for free + landline of many EU countries for free. its really cool

but your PC has to be ON though, and I use a VOIP USB phone, its just like an ordinary phone, but your PC has to be switched ON again, for it to work.

hope that helped

Or use a service like VOIP.co.uk or Sipgate, get an ATA (Analogue Telephone Adapter) which connects to your Router or Modem, plug your standard phone into it and you can make or receive calls over the internet with your computer switched off.
