Hi .... not sure what that is ..... Anti Virus G (?) perhaps. Assume your dealing with a computer idiot, dumb it down from there ..... and that's about my level .... want to learn but have no underlying knowledge ... other that pressing keys and looking at pretty pictures/buying things.
Long winded way to say ... what is AVG please and how ciuld I check it is running free? Thanks Mike |

You have a anti virus program running, do you know what it is called ? if not place your cursor "mouse arrow" on your task bar at the bottom of the screen right click then left click on Task Manager a window will open at the top click Processes and look for avg.

Hi Anna,
I have Norton Anti Virus as part of the BT package ..... Checked Task Manager and couldn't see anything AVG. Know that the system is virus scanned regularly (every few days) plus all down load files have a message saying checked for viruses. Is that "running free?". Have just started a manual scan (takes some time) and my CPU usage is around 30% as NAVW32.EXE is now running (so that must be Nortin Anti Virus W32?" Mike |

OK in your task bar you will have a Norton icon right click on it and shut it down "turn off" as many AV firewalls "like resident shield" can choke the KBPS from the Home Hub so when your Anti Virus is off try a speed test or download.

Hi Anna
Can't find anything with that name ... Resident Shield. Would it be "Personal Firewall" .... Norton seems to have differnent titles .... and I don't know how to send a picture. Within each title are lots of options .... e.g. level of firewall. To start the main headings are: Security Basics - subheads: Autoprotect, Personal Firewall (and 3 others that don't seem relevant) Data Recovery - haven't listed subheads Performance - haven't listed subheads Web Browsing - subheads:autoprotect, personal firewall, spyware blocker, intrusion blocker, ad blocker, pop up blocker Email and Messaging - haven't listed these. Hi
I turned off personal firewall ... but that made no difference and also turned off Ad and Pop Up Blocker .... no change in the speeds. Before and After tried a dell download and got 60kbps amd tried a Mozilla download and got 200 kbps .... Mike |

Anna, got to go ... thanks for your help .... just one last question .... if my line speed is capable of 7mb and BTspeedtester says it is doing 5-6mb actual ..... what sort of speed would I reasonably expect for a 50mb file download.
BT keep saying that 60kbps from a Dell download may be because their server is slow ..... but surely not everyone is getting 60 kbps from Dell .... and surely even a slow server/busy network wouldn't go from 6000kbps to 60? Just want to be informed in my debate with BT .. Cheers Mike |
