Hi Mike
![]() Putting this here because it may be useful to others - To remove a Norton application is not just a case of removing via Add and Remove in Windows you need a special tool and this is suppled by Symantec the makers of Norton for free, Norton Removal Tool > Here i have suggested you remove Norton because you need small foot print security (use less system resource's) so we can concentrate on improving your connection speed, as soon as you have removed Norton please install Comodo Firewall and Comodo BO Clean both are free and very good security. so your first step is to download these two to your Desktop from > Here then remove Norton and install Comodo, i will be here this evening and we can introduce a Anti Virus program. Hi Anna
Have saved the Comodos to my desktop .... am still in debate with BT (they keep saying it is the servers I am using! and nothing to do with them) and wondered (as Norton is their standard package) if they'd make a fuss if I swapped. Anyway .... am ready to go ... in the meantime here is a copy of an email to BT as they have asked me to record download speeds: To BT Broadband Support: "You asked me to send you download data and would call again in 2 days time. Friday 24/8/07 at 6a. 1. Comodo website, download firewall at 5.6mb file got 70kbps speed. 2. Comodo download malware blocker at 1.2mb file got 70kbps 3. BT Speedtester said configured 7000, actual best test 5600kbps 4. Dell.com to upgrade my wireless software (I have a Dell computer) 56mb file got 55kbps 5. Mozilla Firefox 3 for download speed of 200kbps 6. Tried to download a BT film or music file but not willing to pay ... couldn't find anything else on BT for free download ... suggestions? 7. Broadband Genie speed test said "Your speed test result:616.4 Kb According to BT wholesale, your line should be able to support a 6.3 Mbps ADSL connection via ADSL max" 8. BT speedtester at 7am IP profile for your line is - 7000 kbps DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8096 kbps(DOWN-STREAM) Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5701 kbps To Sum UP: BT say my speed should be 5700 kbps but the best I can get is 200kbps and Dell (which I need to use) is 60kbps. This clearly isn't right!" Cheers Anna Mike |

Hi Anna
Will swap the security tomorrow .... but just want to ask as I am having an argument with BT ..... is it really possible that my line could be delivering 6.5mbps (BT speedtester) and yet when I try and download from Dell I can really end up with a 60kbps download speed?? I could understand it dropping off a bit but they are saying that such a loss of speed is entirely explainable because:
And finally, my sister also has BT ... if I linked my computer up to her server/hub ... and did some DLs would that add any knowledge? e,g, if it worked fine or not (and hers did) I just feel that BT are making excuses but maybe what they are saying is true .... but I only get 200kbps at best .... that's alot of speed to lose from 6500kbps. Cheers and thanks all the way Mike |

just another question .... do I take off Norton first and does that mean a virus could sneak in before I load up Comodo.
Plus does comodo have automatic updates ... at the moment my system just does it. Just don't want to make a mess of it. Ta Mike ![]() |

Hi Mike
BT are talking rubbish your line will be around 6-7 MB and you should pull 4 - 6 depending how far away your exchange is "and been honest the Home Hub is not the best router out" when i went back to BT i told them i don't want a Home Hub "but thats just my choice" you should be getting close to what your line shows, Uninstall Norton via add and remove programs then run the removal tool "your Home Hub has a hardware firewall so you will be OK for the short time it takes to install Comodo firewall. ![]() Have given BT some stick, raised an official complaint and asked for ADR to resolve BT taking my cash and not providing service. In meantime will take off the Norton tomorrow am .... so if I stick the Comodos on then am I fully covered for security (you mentioned Antivirus as a separate comment in one email). Also what Routers do you use/like and which ISPs .... have had enough of BT. Mike ps may not reply as am on baby duty from 2300 (i.e. now!) can't find a smilie to express that feeling .... shock. |

Hi Ann, thanks for the info .... how do I learn how to set up an alternative router? Is it hard?
Also, I think I will need an antivirus protector as well I think? any suggestions? As for BT speed .... I am 900m from the exchange ... which seems no too bad to me? I am moving from 5500kbps actual line throughput to 50-60kbps for downloads (e.g. the Comodo antivirus download at 34meg downloaded at 50kbps). Could all that speed loss be down the the hub or could there be something on my computer that causes the problem ... have looked in task manager and can't see anything obvious taking up CPU but CPU does run at 4-10% Mike |
