Unhappy BT - 7meg line speed but 60kbps downloads

Dear All,

Have BT Total Broadband with wireless router .... have had real problems as when I try to download things I typically get only 50-60kbps speeds ....
BUT BT tell me (and speed tests) that my line is capable of 7mbps.
Have tried to work with BY but they tell me the problem is the server the download is on .... but I have a Dell computer and am trying to down load a Dell driver update .... a 90mb file at 60kbps ..... surely BT are talking rubbish .... otherwise how does everyone else using BT Broadband manage to download things.
The best the managed was 230kbps (top speed for a second) downloading from BT's own site.

They have checked for spyware, etc (all ok), run it in Safe Mode (so nothing else running) and still can't get it working fast.

Please tell me how to deal with these people .... I am paying for 8meg (max) my line is capable of 7 meg and I am getting 60kbps .... BT ran Broadbandgenie and that said "Line is capable of 6.3meg but actual speed is 888kbps" .... but BT didn't then work on that.

Really, really need help
cheers
Mike

Hi Mike

I'm just wondering are you using the BT Home Hub ? and if you are do you have a Ethernet cable ? as we need to get into configurations.

Hi Annabel, thanks for the offer to help .... much appreciated.

Just to warn you ... I know little or nothing about computers and broadband ... here goes ........

Typically I use wireless but BT got me to try it with ethernet and that didn't work any better .... but wireless is what I wish to use.

Further info ... BT said it seemed to be working fine for webpages ad that problem seemed to be just downloads (don't know if that is true or means anything).

Cheers
Mike

Ok Mike

We are going to upgrade your Hub, - Insert BT Home Hub CD, then Connect an Ethernet cable between your Computer and BT Home Hub Cancel the auto installation "click close / exit" then open my computer right click on the Drive ? BT icon in the drop down click open then double click on utils and double click on Upgrade Wizard then double click UpgradeBT then double click on UPgradehub, (see pic second from the right) this will up grade your hub via the software and via BT Server, then see if your DL is any better "try it with the cable first"

Type admin for user and the same for pass and after you upgrade the Hub we will go through installing your own name and pass because if your still using the default anybody can hack in.
