Default Coax or digital cable required for connection?

When testing if you have a live socket in your wall, do you need the proper digital cable (the thin wire poking at at the end and the screws on it) or can you plug in a F Connection to Coax adapter at the socket, and run a normal coax into the back of your TV?

I used the later option, and dont know if the signal goes properly, coz electronics isnt my strong point :P I get no channels (BBC etc)

Just did that, and it gets a pretty weak signal. It picks up a few channels (channel 4 .. one that says "virgin media") but its pretty fuzzy.

The coax I run though to the TV is 2 cables (probably about 5-6 metres total) joined .. so could it be possible that its losing signal and the wall socket IS actually live? Or could it be whatever the socket is connected to outside isnt aligned properly, or its just picking up random stuff out of the air with no connection at all?

Do you think its worth me buying the length of proper digital cable (whatever thats called) and running from socket to TV for testing?

I have the box ... it doesnt detect any channels though .. im assuming coz signal is so weak? Anything I can do do you think?

I have the Eurovox 2008, and it scans through the stations, but when it comes up with the channel list after scan, there is 25 of them, but they all have 8 in the signal / quality bar .. and nothing comes up or is stored. I guess it finds them, but cant add them coz the signal is borked?

I forgot I have 2 threads .. see here for more info :P Connecting a Eurovox box??
