i read that keeping a log of the fuel and milage that the customs can inspect will be ok and if they do take you to task it should help convice them that you were trying to do the right thing.
what ever good luck and i love enterprise marswalker |

Gee, didn't think the authorities would care if you ran alt fuel. But, when you think about it, they are always looking for way to lighten your load.
I should have posted here rather than the introduction section about alt fuels-some of my experiences. Yes, the rotary based injection pumps do not like anything other than diesel (my experience) and will cake or gum over period of time. Suspect it is a lack of fully "cleaning" pump with diesel prior to engine shutdown. Been there and done that! I did not choose to go thru a chemical process to change anything as understand it give off a pretty healthy odor. In this area, authorities are really looking to catch drug makers (I am not). Recycled VO was filtered at several stages to catch contaiminents . If only one used, it tended to stop up. An old rotary AC pump provided the movement thro the process. The final was pumped into barrel and allowed to settle and the bottom portion was never used due to additional seperation and water collection. My usage was in 7.3 liter engine truck. Tom |

Has anybody used home made biodiesel in a modern common rail engine if so have you had any problems. If you have what kind of car did you use it in make and year, as i am carrying out a survey.

Am not quite sure what you mean by modern common rail engine, but my usage was in Ford 3/4 ton pickup with rated carrying capacity in excess of 8800 pounds. The diesel engine was an International of 7.3 liters with a standyne "rotary" injection pump. It is NOT recommended to use anything other than dino diesel in this type pump. I did it anyway and ran exhaust gas temp and performance tests using a 50/50 mix of dino and used veg oil. It was my observation that 50/50 mix would actually burn hotter (higher exhaust gases) and no noticeable difference in performance until a load of over 4000 pounds (seat of my pants testing). I used this for a period exceeding 12 months in over the road (interstate freeway) and when I knew engine would be running for hours at a time. I had total of 3 fuel tanks, 2 were factory mounted for dino, and a (switchable) 33 gal for blended svo. One is supposed to "flush" out the veg oil in the system with dino diesel before shutting engine off.
The difficulty arose when the vehicle was not being used on a regular basis. There were times, I did not start up or use the vehicle for months at a time. And when did start, would get the familiar smell of kitchen grease even tho tanks were set for dino. Isuspect that somehow the mix was not completely flushed out, and over period of time it damaged (seized)the rotary pump. Curiously, either due to my experimentation, or dipping my wick in the wrong place(buying bad fuel) developed a case of orange algae in one of the straight dino tanks! This was probably 2 years after usage of mix. Due to rising cost of fuel, I removed and discarded the orange algae tank, cleaned fuel system, and installed several aftermarket prefilters of diminishing micron diameter inline. Summary: IMHO the svo and bio-fuel usage in a compression combustion engine with a boush type "piston" injection pump is viable. However, it is messy, stinky and certain procedures must be followed to maintain fuel system integrity . I have not tried the lye bio cookoff process, but think it doable also. That process is even more exacting tho as I understand it. Hope I did not answer the wrong question, or gave you TMI. Tom |

ok, what i ment by modern common rail diesel is that it only has a high pressure pump to give high pressure diesel to the diesel rail and the injectors are electric like a solinoid. i have heard that the injectors will block with bio but no one not even kia will give a straight yes or no.
its not like the old fords etc with the bosch fuel pumps which pump direct to each injector
