Hi,
I am also learning this stuff,
Did you sniff for Macs on you own pc, if so those macs are no good to prog a modem for your own use, you will have to swap / obtain a mac from different segment of your local network.

With most modems you can force any valid config - eg use a 20meg config with a 2 meg MAC

Just get a valid mac from a neighbouring UBR and use that. With the 250 modems there is a telnet command to force config, done automatically with the configurator programs. With the Surfboard (hackware) just enter the config file name you want to force in the hack tab.
