Lightbulb 3.5mm jack splitter reverse

I have a spliter thats designed for you to use 2 pairs of headphones from one audio source. can i use the same device in reverse?
i have just bought a speaker system for my i pod that connects with a 3.5mm jack, i think i'll put my tv sound through the same speakers. can i connect the 2 sources with the adapter to the speakers. i ask because , i know it will work with each individual source, but what will happen if both sources are playing at the same time??? will i break my speakers???

I wouldn't do it in case the voltages from the TV are higher than from the Ipod and may damage it.If you must connect both at the same time then you need to connect a capacitor in series with each item to block any voltages before it enters the speaker system.

I am in a similar position to the first poster. I recently installed a TV card in my nephew's PC. However it has its own 3.5mm sound output, rather than going through the sound card. So when using the PC normally my nephew has the speakers plugged into the sound card; when he wants to watch TV he has to fiddle round at the back and connect the speakers to the TV card instead.

Is it possible to _buy_ a cable like this. with two males and one female? I have looked at lots of cable and PC hardware stores online but found nothing. I thought I had found the perfect cable - but it turned out it was just a pack with the connectors, but no cable connecting them!!! [So having to sell them on on Ebay - can't link to the example fo what it is because I am a new poster.]

If I could get one then he could run both the soundcard and the TV card into the speakers without fiddling about. Even better if it had a selector switch (which could solve voltage problems?)

If you can't buy them anywhere then I'm happy to just give up!

thats risky business allan - but it would be cool if that actually worked... you'd be like a dj. as for the 3.5mm splitter reverse, why not solder the connectors yourself? however, if you did something like this, i gather that a sizable amount of noise will bother your ears on the output.

Risky, this equipment is designed with specific voltage and wattage in mind....
