Default RE: failed windows xp pro updates

hi,

i have recently upgraded to xp professional from home edition. i had already installed all the windows updates for home edition before upgrading.

now i when i try to install the windows updates for xp pro, it detects and downloads the updates BUT fails to install everytime.

i've already tried to start/stop automatic updates service from "services.msc" and renamed the "SoftwareDistribution" to initiate a new SD folder. disabled all firewalls, scanned and fixed any registry problems as well.

does anyone have any other solution to this?

It would make no difference as when you Installed XP Pro to C: / your boot HDD you would of had to format C: before you could install XP Pro did you perform a "clean install" ? also please look at "add and remove" enable to show up dates and see if you have two the same "this can happen and it will disrupt the installation of the downloaded updates.

hi cindy,

as mentioned i performed an "upgrade" installation from home edition to professional, which means no format.

i checked the software updates and no updates are currently installed.

any other ideas?

OK with you now, have you tried updating form Microsoft in Safe mode with Networking ? and obviously something is not right with your upgrade can you perform a clean install of Windows XP Pro SP2 ?, as you say you have just upgraded, a clean install is the preferred way to go.

Is it the .NET framework that's failing to update? If it is, you need to uninstall your .NET frameworks (all of them) froms "add/remove programs" and then reinstall them (you can download them from the MS website). I had the same problem. Apparently it can happen if the framework gets corrupted somehow.
