the dsc-H7 is a very advanced camera, it also comes with a carl zeis lens and mega optical zoom, good on megapixels as well, but i should imagine it would be pricier than the panasonic FZ7 although better |

The Panasonic Lumix cameras are superb. I have a Lumix FZ20 and the best thing about it is the image stabiliser when working at maximum zoom. I dont need a tripod.
One thing to ask yourself Cindy is do you want a camera that you carry around with you in a pocket or bag or do you want a camera that is a bit more bulky like the ones pictured above. My daughter has a Minolta digital SLR and after using it for about a year she has bought a Canon (cant remember the model) but it is very compact and gives pictures very nearly as good as the Minolta. |

The major disadvantage of the smaller camera appears to be the limited optical zoom. They are generally 3 or 4 x as opposed to the 10, 12 x or even more of the bulkier cameras. I assume the digital stabilisation is more difficult to include in the small cameras and is less necessary.
The two smaller cameras that I have used recently are, my daughter's Canon Powershot A630 and her friend's Olympus FE-280. The latter is very good quality and is also very slim. |

I saw that one but I dont have any experience of it. I don't think that with a Leica lens and Panasonic's experience in imaging that you could go far wrong with that one. Also it takes a standard SD memory card rather than the special cards that some cameras use.
