I currently have a paid for 20mb VM Broadband connection.
I am thinking about buying a ready - modded modem. Is the idea to stop the VM service, swap MAC address and clone a modem or simply to subscribe to the cheapest broadband package and use the new modem to uncap the speed back up to 20mb? |

You could do either, but don't use your own MAC, get one from a neighbouring area. It's important to keep subscribing to something so they don't disconnect your cable feed.

Thanks for your answer Lincsat.
If I don't use my own MAC then I guess there would be no point in paying for a cheap connection as I do have other services with VM? Is this logical? If, however, I was to keep up minimum subscription for broadband is there a reason why I wouldn't use my real current MAC for the new uncapped modem? |

If your subscribed MAC was suddenly downloading at 10 times the speed you pay for - someone may get suspicious

Each answer provokes a new question!
Thanks for the heads-up about being noticed. From what you say, does it follow that I should only connect at the same speed as the account of the swapped MAC address - and how would I know what that was? |

If you're using a cloned MAC, it's very difficult to be traced so less problematic to use a higher speed. I would always suggest keeping your subscribed modem connected even if using a clone. Maybe use your subscribed modem for another PC in the house, it's just basic security.

First thing to do is have a look at the Haynes Guide to Cable Modems, lots of great info in there
