How fast would one of these hard drive based camcorders transfer video files to a computer? Would it be much faster than capturing footage to the computer from a MiniDV camcorder in real time? I find that to be the biggest pain with my MiniDV camcorder.

It definitely is faster. CApturing footage from a Mini DV tape is Real time. That means you need to spend 1 hour to capture 1 hour of footage. HDD based drives do 1 hour about 10 times lesser than that.

Any other feedback?

I guess the transfer speed would depend on the whether it is USB or firewire. I have a fast firewire compact flash card reader that I use to download still pictures taken with my Canon 1D. It transfers pictures incredibly fast compared to the USB connection built into the camera. The info I have seen on the GZ-HD7 states that file transfer occurs via USB, although it does have a firewire port too. I hope the USB tranfer is fast.

If USB is 2.0 is should be fast, but from a technology standpoint, firewire just has more throughput. So if you have to option do firewire

I would "HOPE" it uses Firewire - otherwise, why have it?...."

With the newest USB 3.0 technologie the transfer goes even faster: 2 hours of HDD footage in 15 minutes. I had to disable my business security software because it was causing me some problems. Can someone recommend me a good professional HHD camera?
