No video footage out yet - as it is still not out in most shops here in Japan. A Japanese video mag (Video Salon) has an overview article - that is quite positive - but is not really to be trusted as they also need advertising from the camera makers. Guess we all have to wait for watch.impress.co.jp to post an article and examples for download, and that might happen quite soon. I am optimistic that this time around JVC/Victor will deliver - as they are now owned by Panasonic (the pixelshift should give you a hint of that) who have large resources and know-how. Who knows, perhaps JVC will also present at this coming NAB a pro version of the HD7 with XLR and 720p etc. Would be a logical development and choice for a small B-roll camera (news, docs, etc) to have if you are into the ProHD line.

Today I handled the Sony HC7, the Canon HV20 and the Victor/JVC HD7 in Bic Camera in Shinjuku, Tokyo. After seeing the footage from these cameras, put them through some color correction tests and pixel peeping in After Effects, there is no doubt in my mind that the HD7 beats the c**p out of the other 2. Honestly, the difference in image wuality is so small that most will never, ever, never be able to see the difference - in particular when someone close or loved is being filmed. The handling on the other hand is like night and day. The Canon, has a great image and a cinemode that gives one everything one can ask for if one wants to color correct. The Sony has a dreadful image in my opinion, noise and artifacts that are fine I guess for general use, but will not hold water if compard to the other two. Th HD7 feel increadible in hand. I've got a large hand and can not operate that silly wheel at the front, for focus adjusting. My finger gets stuck between the body and the LCD. The Sony feels well built, the Canon like a cheap plastic junk, while as the HD7 feels solid and superbly built. The joystick on the Canon is in serious danger of getting stuck and break off. The stupid touch screen that Sony offers is simply in the way of doing anything quickly. While quite a cool feature, I feel is slows you down and everything is buired under a stack of "push-this-button-topush-this..." I do not understand also why Canon and Sony have to re-invent the wheel, over and over again. I mean this focus "knob" at the front is just.... I mean who in God's name gets paid to think up such a silly control. The HD7 has all manual controls within a reach and push - and the focus system is fantastic. Everything seems to be designed sith everything wuickly within reach. Easy to pull the manual focus - and with the focus assist - a dream. I will be getting the HD7, no doubt about it. Wait a bit and the price will come down to being a bit more then the other two. Having the footage already on a drive is a bonus, and together with the QuickTime component that comes with the camera, editing is a breeze.

...oh - and the FUJINON lens is a great lens. Being able to open up to f1.8 gives a nice dof control for close head shots. The image stabilisation is not too bad nor is is great. Guess one can not have everything at that price range. The feeling I get though is that I would happily use this camera as a B-roll for Pro shoots, while the other ones from Sony and Canon are nice toys that is a nightmare to operate manually. Of course, if you are for point-and-shoot all three will make a fine companion.

here's a sample of pushing the image to the limit - and even beyond - as the color corrected one has a bit of a noise. Of course one would not push things that far, as can be seen here, but it was interresting to take the image that far. This is resized to SD - and needed wuite a bit of sharpening - but I find that wven working in HD all three of them need sharpening, just like with DSLRs.

there is an example at
http://bb-east.ddo.jp/~sochn/cgi-bin/login.pl The extension of the files stored by GZ-HD7 is .TOD so it easier to search the web using this keyword |
