P means progressive as to compare to i for interlaced
This means you are viewing 24 whole frames like its with cimema films (and not 50 half frames (pal coutries) of interlaced video). If I am accurate this seems to gives a real old cinema feeling. But 25 frames if good for resolution is not that good for mouvement .
There will be a long way to go before camcorder will be dealing with 1920 x 1080 p (JVC comming Everio hd7 is 1920 x 1080 i )

It sees 1080p24 and records 1080i60. But it uses 3 by 2 pull down to do so. This then allows you to extract the original 1080p24 in the video editor. It may only be 1440x1080 but it's still 1080p24.

Are any avchd cams able to do 1080 24p yet. Would they be 1440 by 1080 as well?

For the moment, the HV20 is the only consumer camera capable of this.

It would be good to have feedbacks from owners about this.

so is it really 1080p24?? ;O
Most of the current HD capture formats make some kind of compromise on video resolution. DVCPRO HD in PAL is also 1440x1080, but in NTSC the frame size dives further, to 1280x1080. Same with DVCPRO HD 1080p24 and 1080p30.

XDCAM is 1440x1080 across the board, but with the extra temporal resolution needed for NTSC, you'd have to suspect the still PQ will be slightly better in PAL.

But yes, it's really 1080p24. AFAIK, it's stored as interlaced 1080i60 in NTSC, and the simpler 1080p25 in 1080i50 in PAL. Easy to edit, easy to archive, compatible.

Did anyone say yet if the footage on a large screen HD tv looks like HD?
I want sharp video.

I already have a Canon optura Xi and wonder if this camera would produce a lot better video seeing that it is HD.

Have tested sd footage and hd footage

There is a huge difference between hd even at 720p and sd quality.
The bigger the screen (flat pannel hd or hd ready projector) the more obvious is the perceived difference.

Toni1

Thanks for the info Toni. I hope to get a HV20 soon and try it. I think I will buy from a store that allows returns in case I don't like it.
