Graphic Card is what drives the video preview during edits. HDV needs at least something like a 7900 GT(X) 256 MB. SLI or CrossFire configured cards is the best.

Hard drive wouldn't matter much, from my experience, unless it is a USB External HDD.

There is one draw back with Vegas even 7 concerning work flow . If for example you cut some seconds of video upon editing , the whole video will be rendered (no proxy ) and this is a problem even if you have a high speed newest pc.

Slutions :
Well known ConnectHD add on which is Vegas specific I think
Other I heard about : VAAST Gearshift or Womble
maybe Vegas 8 ? will have Smart render

I have Avid Express Pro HD running on a Dual Xeon workstation with 2GB ram. I don't have an HDV camcorder yet, but it does an awesome job on DV. Also, I have imported High Definition .mov files into it (1920 by 1080 pixels) and it edited cleanly and just as easily as DV.

Avid is great , you'r lucky to have it and the bi xenon but its a professional level and rather expensive solution. Canopus Edius 4 is also a great expensive product.
There are also solutions for bigginers with limited budget that can work on older computers;
Mine : Athlon 2600 on Asus motherboardfirewire in . I upgraded with 1 giga memory . I do simple editing with simple transitions with Ulead Videostudio 10+ that does not have all the sofistications of more a expensive solution but is adapted for my computer since it comes with smart rendering (proxy) that alows me to cut down the reder time of my edited outcome (to about 1/10 of the total time without this feature).
I mean that one with limited budget can also do the job OK

Toni1, just to let you know, I started years ago with Avid Express for DV when it was just out. I was trying to edit a video that was about an hour long, and most of the applications that I tried had audio sync issues or simply could not export anything larger than 2 gigs. Many crashed often, including Adobe Premier. I decided to spend the money to get Avid and havn't been sorry. I have upgraded several times through special offers from Avid to get the system I have today. Even though I am an amateur, I did edit a video that used four cameras and 13 microphones and produced a 2 hour DVD with many menu options. Avid handled the editing without any issues.

PS - I forgot to tell you that I have heard that Vegas Video is very good, but have not had an opportunity to try it out. It would definitely be less expensive than the system that I have.

Got it, I also heard about Avid capcities and stabilty dealing with multiple camera sound and so . Investing in a solution like yours is rational in need/investment d?cision from what I understand.I would have liked myself to have Avid or Canopus Edius but I also had to pay the camcorder Sony HC1 and the Hd Projector (Pana PTAX100) so I had to stick to my old computer and the not so bad VideoStudio 10 that is not horse power consuming.

The result of projection on a 3.6 meters base white wall is astonishing . Will be posting some video soon ( have already a short 2 min clip called Summer Dream on zudeo.com )

What I am saying is for bigginers with simple editing needs and limited budget , its not necessary to get the top standard computer with the top editing solution. Otherwise you are right it all depends on personal needs and on the money you can invest or we are ready to use.

Seems you need a beast of a PC to even run (play) HD video. I downloaded some sample videos and i can barely play them on my athlon 64 1.8 1gb ram. Maxes out CPU load - I can only imagine how demanding HD EDITING would be!
