Hi, I have been using the XL H1 for a year now, and the XH A1 uses the same CCD set ... to be honest.. the HDV out of my camera is absolutely gorgeous... and you'd expect the same from the XH A1 .. DV or DVCAM is SO poor by comparison. The XH A1 must be the best value for money HDV camcorder on the market in terms of bang for the buck. True color resolution of the 3 x 1440 x 1080 ccds is awesome. Canon's features on the XL H1 just blew me away ...the XH A1 will produce very similar results. No contest as far as the XL2 is concerned.

Honestly, if want something else- go try out PDW-350. Nothing else comes even close.

Sort of.

I've tried the Sony F-350 ...apart from the timelapse feature and the 'true' progressive capability ... the picture quality was extremely comparable to the XL H1 .... but wuth the XL H1 you can monitor 4 channel or either of the two channel sound channel groups with a pushbutton switch on the side of the camcorder ... something you cannot do on the XDCAM HD camcorders.
Pictures wise... not a lot of difference in my honest opinion.

Why go with the XL2 ??
The XH A1 has a better feature set, probably a better fixed lens, as it is HD capable, and certainly the option to record DV or HDV .. and HDV even downconverted gives MUCH better color detail ...against which ...you have the 'advantage' of a switchable lens option...IF you can afford it.... you'd be better to spend your money on a wide angle conversion for the XH A1 !

I've used the XL2 ... the pictures are good..but no way as good as the XH A1.
