I haven't used the Merlin with the HV10, but I have compared it to my Steadicam JR. The Merlin is built so much better than the JR-all alluminum except for the gimble/grip which is still made out of tough plastic. It is not as bulky as the JR and weighs less when appropriately weighted for the same camera. It is just so much more solid feeling than the JR.
I will often have to re-trim the JR everytime I use it even though I keep my Sony TRV950 attached at all times. I suspect the Merlin will not need re-trimming as much as everything is so solid on it. The slight downside with this is that the stage trimming wheels are stiffer to turn (so they would maintain their setting better), making it more difficult to trim "on the fly". As well, of course, the Merlin doesn't come with a built in monitor yet either. Overall though, I like it better and am planning on replacing my JR with the Merlin. |
