In video- start with wide and zoom in on the subject. You will notice how the wind noise disappears and only subject is heard. In this regard, it's one of the best mics. On the downside- if you compare it with built-in mic you'll notice how thin and "telephone-like" the audio sounds. Basically, frequency response isn't all that great.

Thanks...very helpful... the results are similar to what I was getting with the ECM-HS1, the HS1 had slightly better dynamic range. Also the HS1 had less wind noise, but it had a foam windscreen. Since the intent is to isolate individual conversations and minimize the crowd noise next to me it might work OK.

Size & form factor is the other consideration. The DSR-PC105 w/ECM-HS1 had the mic shoe more toward the rear of the camera which helped make it a small hand held package. This is why I was looking at the ECM-HGZ1, it's small size. In fact, I'd still be using the PC105 if hadn't been demolished by a 1200lb. horse

But...what better excuse to convince the wife to let me get a new HD cam

Overall, how do HC7 users rate the internal mic? Is there significant motor noise?

How is the mic input? Is it noisy? Basically, if you use a decent mic is the analog section of the cam going to let you down?

Does there seem to be a limiter on the mic input if you have it set to manual?

Overall, there seems to be a lot of attention to video quality, but it's hard to find info on audio in these cams.
