Does anybody have any experience with the Sony ECM-HGZ1 Shotgun Microphone? or experienced recommendations for other shotgun mics for use on the HC7?
I'd like to minimize the amount of crowd noise from surroundings and pick up more usable audio from the subjects in the video. Thanks, -jim |

I've used it.
"USED," means no longer do for whatever reason. Reason: It does eliminate crowd and picks up only subject, but the quality is so poor I'd rather use the built in mic in any of the cheapest cams. HC1 had a good built in mic, so does XL H1, sony vx2000 had a bad mic in comparison. HC3 is okay, etc. |

Prior to getting the HC7, I used a DSR-PC105 w/ECM-HS1 mic. Primary function was convenience and portability. The ECM-HS1 actually performed quite well for it's intended purpose, but the built in mic of the PC105 wasn't that great to begin with.
I was hoping Sony had improved the shotgun mic quality to match the HC7, but with a street price of $50, guess they didn't want to put too much effort in it. |

Even not very expensive shotgun mic. will give you much better results than build in camera microphone, sad but true, Rode VideoMic is the poopular and really tested by many others choice.

I'm uploading an HC3 clip with the Sony gun mic mentioned above. Hear for yourself.
http://www.listvideo.com/details.php?image_id=69 In video- start with wide and zoom in on the subject. You will notice how the wind noise disappears and only subject is heard. In this regard, it's one of the best mics. On the downside- if you compare it with built-in mic you'll notice how thin and "telephone-like" the audio sounds. Basically, frequency response isn't all that great. |
