What are my options for editing AVCHD video on a Mac? Do the cameras come with software that runs on a Mac?

As far as i know, there is currently no way to edit avchd on a Mac.

I would suspect that there will be some AVCHD editing solutions unveiled at NAB. Hopefully Premiere Pro will support it. Otherwise you'll need bootcamp.

does this mean that the newer panasonic machines aren't viable for mac users? (not without some third party converter, at least...)

I'm sure that Mac will eventually support AVCHD formats in it's editing programs. Don't let the current lack of editing support on Macs for AVCHD be a deterent. It's only temporary. Having said that, I'm very happy to continue using HDV for HD video- I love my Canon HV20.

If I'm not mistaken, Final Cut Pro 6 can handle AVCHD footage. In the spec sheet, it says :

# AVCHD support is supported only with a Mac Pro with an Intel Xeon processor.
# DVD-based AVCHD camcorders are not supported in Mac OS X v10.4 or earlier.

This seems to suggest there is some kind of support for the codec. My guess is it transcodes the footage to ProRes 422 or Apple Intermediate upon import.
