Default Converting anamorphic to 4:3 in Avid.

I've accidentally shot some footage in anamorphic for a project in which the rest of the footage is 4:3. I was wondering if it would be possible to convert it using Avid (Avid Express Pro to be precise) without losing too much quality. My guess would be that I'll need to 'squash' the image vertically and then enlarge it so that the empty space at the top and bottom would no longer be visible. If this is the case, how would I go about doing it? Also, if there's a better way then I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks.

I'm new to video editing- what's a good package to get started on for very basic editing? Mostly taking family footage, and don't want to spend much on software.

Is the video in DV format? If so, you can stretch it if necessary in Avid but you will loose some horizontal resolution (fewer pixels). I haven't done this with DV, but did import 16:9 HD footage into a standard 4:3 DV timeline in Avid Xpress Pro HD and the program simply cropped the horizontal edges upon input to create a 4:3 frame.
