I'll take your word after I post 2 more times (1 after this) so I can have 3 posts and check out the video goodness of the HC7!
By the way, what is the main advantage of these camcorders when using SD footage? Is it just better color or is the clarity of the image noticeable as well? The resolution ends up being the same right so I assume there are not too many other variables or am I mistaken? I am excited to use it in HD regardless! |

Well, since I'm online right now I might as well answer the question: what's the big deal?
You see, movies are shot either on film or with CineAltas. Then they are resampled for DVD. Home movies are shot with Handycams and then are burned to DVD. However, you'd agree that the difference is incredible. 24p is the primary reason for no interlace lines, but overall sharpness is due to high-rez capture. With even HC3 and definitely with HV10 and HC7 the downconverted footage looks very much like HD, just a tad smoother. Even though it's not HD anymore it still retains very high level of detail, unlike the cheap handycams. Of course, that depends on your authoring software and TV setup. Composite cables tend to "over-smooth" things out. Best viewing is via HDMI or at least component. |

I know this has little relevance to this discussion, but I just saw at work (in my lab) a F900 through a Panasonic 26" HD lcd and it looks like seeing through a clean window!

That depends on what kind of set it is. Most sets are 720p now. So, a 37" 1080i looks a lot sharper than 37" 720p.
It is a little subjective, of course, but in my opinion the difference is quite visible. HC7 on a 42" 1080i set would look fantastic. You do have to pay close attention to the actual pixelage of the screen. There are some sets that display only 1366 x 768, even though they take in 1080i. There are newer sets that display full 1920 x 1080, those would show every little detail. |

quick add:
I have played HC3 through a 42" 1080i plasma HDTV and only in some cases did I notice that HC3 lacked resolution- some areas looked like blobs of light, otherwise, it was excellent. |
