Default Panasonic HDC-SD1

I couldn't find a thread for the new Panasonic SD1, so I thought I would start one. I'm looking to buy a new camcorder after our old one has lasted 10 years. I'd like to get something that might be good for the next ten which means I'm looking to go ahead and buy into the leading edge of HD camcorders. I checked this camcorder out at Circuit City --- I was actually there to look at the Canon HV10 --- but, of course, they had no power hooked up to either. I did find SD1 to have a nice simple layout and found it really comfortable to hold. Plus, the manual is now available online so I've checked that out. A few online reviews seem quite positive. I can probably live without the ability to edit AVCHD video (at least until the software catches up a bit more so it's not so complex). I'm looking to try to find it if this would be a good upscale "family" camcorder or not... so if anyone has any opinions, that would be great.

Default Panasonic HDC-SD1

I'm also thinking about buying this fellow. One thing I wonder is how the CCD chips with a resolution of 520.000 pixels can produce HD images. I read somewhere that if you take a still image from the Panasonic, reduce it by half and enlarge it again, no noticeable image quality loss is to be seen. Can anyboby confirm this? If true, I would rather stick with an old fashioned (and much cheaper) MiniDV-Cam.
